First, you are dealt 2 cards, with a possibility of a 3rd depending on the hand. Cards 2-9 hold normal value, A is 1 and 10, J, Q & K are 0. If the total of your first 2 cards are over 10 you deduct 10, for example:

7 + 8 = 15- 10 =5.

The player must hit a 3rd card if their first 2 total 5 or under. The dealer’s 3rd card rules are more complex and can be found under the game rules.
